Voice Studio

Katelyn Lee has been teaching private voice lessons for thirteen years. She began her teaching career in 2009 after receiving the prestigious Associate Instructor of Voice assistantship at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. During her tenure there, she taught both undergraduate and graduate-level college students and prepared them for juries, auditions, and other special events.

After finishing at Indiana University in 2014, Katelyn moved to Chicago and began building a private voice studio. In 2015, she became involved in Music of the Baroque’s “Strong Voices” outreach program. Through this platform, Katelyn is able to provide free voice lessons to Chicago Public Schools high-school students who would not otherwise have the opportunity.

In January of 2022, Katelyn joined the faculty at VanderCook College of Music as Professor of Voice. She currently teaches applied lessons and leads the Vocal Chamber Ensemble, a performance-based class focusing on a cappella chamber music. VanderCook is exclusively concentrated on music teacher education and is the only institution of its kind in the United States. Katelyn exposes her students to varied repertoire and gives them the tools to perform confidently and with secure knowledge of musical ideas and dramatic context. She also frequently participates in master classes. Most recently, she helped create a free online session through the VCM Voice Lab titled, “Break Through the Noise: Creating a Successful Career in Singing and Teaching.” Katelyn is thrilled to have a part in training future music educators from all over the country.

Katelyn is a former voice faculty member at Music Institute of Chicago, where she taught students of all ages and ability levels. Additionally, Katelyn took part in performances held by the school as a soloist in hopes of inspiring students to continue studying music and pursuing their passions. Katelyn is also a former faculty member of the Cantabile School as well as the Academy of Music and Art.

Through classical voice study, Katelyn believes students form a solid foundation in proper vocal technique that is applicable to every style of singing. Her job as teacher is to meet every individual need, and that cannot be done by simply consulting a teaching manual or pedagogy book. It can only be accomplished by forming a personal relationship with the student that encourages free and open communication. Learning a classical vocal technique involves a great deal of trial and error, and Katelyn strives to find an individual teaching language for each student that inspires confidence, diligence, perseverance, and most of all, joy in singing.

“I have greatly enjoyed and benefited from my vocal lessons with Katelyn. Through these lessons I have grown as a singer and musician. My Monday afternoon with Katelyn is the highlight of my week!”
